Our Story
Why We Fight
On April 1, 2025, our world was turned upside down. The owner's wife was diagnosed with Oligodendroglioma IDH-mutant and 1p/19q-codeleted — a rare form of stage 3 brain cancer. What started as the most challenging day imaginable became the beginning of an ongoing battle — one that has been fought with love, faith, and an incredible support system.
That fight continues to this day, and it has shaped everything about how we approach life and the work we do. It taught us that life is short, relationships matter, and if you're going to pour yourself into something — make sure it counts. Every backyard we touch should leave a family with something that brings them together.
That is why Banana Hammocks Pool & Spa donates a portion of every project's proceeds to the American Brain Tumor Association. When you hire us, you're not just getting a premium pool builder — you're helping fund the fight against this devastating disease.
Understanding the Diagnosis
What Is Oligodendroglioma?
Oligodendroglioma is a type of brain tumor that develops from oligodendrocytes — the cells that produce the protective covering around nerve fibers in the brain. It is classified as a rare central nervous system tumor.
The specific subtype — IDH-mutant and 1p/19q-codeleted — refers to molecular markers found in the tumor's DNA. While these markers are associated with a somewhat more favorable response to treatment compared to other gliomas, it remains a serious and life-altering diagnosis that requires ongoing treatment, monitoring, and an enormous amount of courage.
Brain tumors are among the deadliest forms of cancer, yet research remains critically underfunded compared to other cancers — which is why every donation matters.
